mp3: Surfer Blood - Swim

The current music influx of surf/garage/wave/whatever bands is a tad bit on the curious side given the current time of year (39 degrees outside by my thermostat) and many of these band’s general proximity to water. I love a good fuzzed-out beach anthem as much as the next guy, but its hard to get into summer grooves when you’re wearing mittens and shit. But, I digress.

Florida’s aptly-named Surfer Blood is riding a pretty substantial wave of blogospherehype. I was skeptical to give another surf-inspired band a chance, but I begrudgingly did. To my surprise, I was delighted to hear an album that doesn’t sound like it was recorded through a laptop microphone in a closet (not that that’s always a bad thing).

Their debut, Astro Coast, is catchy without possessing any kind of real polish. It sounds similar to the way the first Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin record was recorded, and that’s never a bad thing. Nothing earth-shattering here, just some dudes playing catchy music in an understated fashion. Bravo guys.

You can pre-order the album now, do it here.
